Our Catholic faith teaches us that through prayer, not only can we directly connect with God — as if that wouldn’t be enough — but also with all of the Saints and Angels in heaven for any reason, large or small. One of the most beautiful things about prayer is that we can do it at any time and in any place. What a comforting thought!

Why a Home Prayer Corner is a Good Idea

Every home has distinct places for sleeping, bathing, or cooking. Why not have a special spot just for prayer? Creating a home prayer corner helps establish a special area where we can focus 100% on developing our relationship with God.

Imagine it as a mini-retreat center, where you can pray, say the Rosary, read the Bible, and journal or draw as you reflect on His teachings and the events of the day. Even if you can only spend a few minutes in your prayer corner, it will be time well-spent nourishing your heart and spirit.

There is no right or wrong way to create a home prayer corner. Do what feels natural and welcoming to you and the space you live in. Here are five ideas to get you started:

1.       The Small Apartment

Remember that there is always room for prayer, even in a tiny apartment! Assess your space and get creative. If you don’t have an extra room or even extra space, try creating a “pocket-sized” prayer corner with tealight candles, a travel bible, a Rosary, and a small notebook. You can even invest in a dedicated folding chair that can be tucked away when you aren’t using it.

2.       Newly Married

For newly married couples, a prayer corner can reinforce the message of God’s love and the love and commitment you have made to one another. Make it a space you can use separately and together with spiritual reading, candles (real or electric), and journals for each of you.

3.       Households with Young Children

For young children who might be afraid of the dark, consider making an age-appropriate prayer corner in their room lit by a small nightlight or electric candle. If they wake up in the middle of the night with nightmares or other worries, our Heavenly Father’s presence will be there to reassure them.

4.       The Large Family

Involve your entire family in creating the prayer corner so they’ll feel welcome using it. Have everyone contribute an item such as a lamp, candles, favorite spiritual books, or religious images. Enjoy watching how this special family space evolves over time.

5.       Empty Nesters

Young families are forever appreciative of parents and grandparents who can devote more time to pray on another’s behalf. A prayer corner with a comfortable yet supportive chair accompanied by a favorite religious statue, a crucifix, Rosary, and family photos makes for an ideal spot for contemplation and prayer.

A Home Prayer Corner Becomes Your Sacred Space

With a little bit of thought, you can create the perfect home prayer corner for your family. Once you start to use it regularly, you’ll be amazed by what happens when you sit down and take the time to listen to what God has to say.
