Looking to God in Times of Change

The words from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, “nothing is so painful to the human mind as a great and sudden change,” spoken by one of our valedictorians, rang through the gymnasium, my ears, and the ears of each of my other ninety-four graduating classmates. Graduating has posed new challenges to all ninety-five of us: work, college, and the real world. For us and for many others, it is a period of immense change.

Some of us are moving across the country, and for others, college marks the first time that they have had to cook, do laundry, or be alone. Thirty-four of us, myself included, are the only person from our high school going to the college we are attending. We only have the summer to prepare ourselves for these changes; it’s going to be a rollercoaster.

Among all the change we experience, however, there is one constant. God. No matter what changes you face, He is there and willing to provide. Deuteronomy 31:8 states, “the Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged,” reiterating God’s presence during our times of suffering and struggle.

Unfortunately, losing sight of God during painful times of change and transition is easy and common. Trust in Him even when you cannot see Him because He is with you always. Look to Him for the strength and guidance you need. God answers in His own ways, even if you can’t directly see or hear them. Keep your fears, hopes, and worries in your prayers, no matter what change you find yourself going through, and God will help you. Good luck and God bless.
